What is the Wilks Score?

The Wilks coefficient, developed by Robert Wilks, is a formula used in powerlifting to compare lifters across different body weights and sexes. Your Wilks score is calculated by multiplying your total (squat + bench + deadlift) by a coefficient derived from your body weight, producing a single number that levels the playing field between lighter and heavier athletes.

The Wilks formula was the official standard for powerlifting competition rankings for decades. A score above 300 is considered good for competitive powerlifting, above 400 is excellent, and elite lifters often exceed 500. Because the coefficient favors middle weights, lifters in the 75–90 kg range often have an advantage in Wilks comparisons.

While the DOTS formula has largely replaced Wilks in IPF-affiliated competitions since 2020, Wilks scores remain widely used in many federations and are a popular way for lifters to compare their all-time totals. Use this calculator to track your Wilks score as you progress through your powerlifting journey.
