Dumbbell preacher curl alternatives

An EZ bar, preacher-curl machine or low cable retains elbow flexion with the upper arms on a preacher pad. Each changes how the hands share the resistance.

The original uses palm-up dumbbells with the upper arms supported. These alternatives keep that support while changing the implement, guided path or resistance direction; choose a separate load and comfortable bottom position.

    Similar movement

    Preacher curl

You need: EZ bar and plates + Preacher bench with adjustable seat and upper-arm pad

    Why it fits
Keeps supported palm-up elbow flexion on a preacher pad.
    What changes
Take an underhand EZ bar instead of independent dumbbells. Both arms share one bar and its angled grip; keep the upper arms on the pad and avoid forcing a painful bottom position.

    Similar movement

    Machine preacher curl

You need: Seated preacher-curl machine with upper-arm pad and handles

    Why it fits
Keeps the upper arms supported during an underhand curl.
    What changes
Use the dedicated machine’s handles and pad with the seat adjusted to your arms. A guided lever replaces the independent dumbbells; the machine’s path and load scale are separate.

    Similar movement

    Cable preacher curl

You need: Adjustable cable pulley set low + Short cable bar attachment + Preacher bench with adjustable seat and upper-arm pad

    Why it fits
    Keeps a preacher-supported underhand curl.
    What changes
Place the preacher bench facing a low pulley and use a shared curl bar. Cable resistance replaces dumbbells, and both hands share the attachment; keep both upper arms against the pad.

How we choose replacements

These are curated alternatives, chosen for the movement and the job the exercise does in a workout. A shared muscle group is not enough. Read what changes before choosing: support, range of motion, balance and resistance can all differ. If your goal is to improve a specific lift, alternatives do not replace practice of that lift.
