Meet the front of the thigh

The quadriceps are four muscles at the front of your thigh that straighten the knee. The rectus femoris also crosses the hip. Squats and leg presses combine knee and hip movement; leg extensions focus on knee extension.

Choose your starting point

Use a supported machine

The leg press and hack squat provide different supported setups. A leg press uses a seat; a hack squat places you under shoulder pads. Learn each machine’s adjustments and safety stops separately.

Choose a squat or split stance

A goblet squat uses a weight held in front. A dumbbell split squat keeps both feet on the floor, while a Bulgarian split squat adds a raised rear-foot support.

Focus on knee extension

A leg-extension machine loads the movement of straightening the knee. It can fill a different role from an exercise that also involves substantial hip movement.

How to choose

Consider support and setup

A guided path, a back pad and a free-weight setup each change what you need to manage. Choose based on your familiarity and the equipment available, rather than assuming one machine is always easier.

Give each movement its own working weight

Machine geometry and free-weight setups differ. Find a manageable load for the exercise you choose rather than converting the number from another movement.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a machine to train my quads?

No. Goblet squats, split squats and step-ups offer options with free weights, while bodyweight squats need no external load. The useful choice depends on your available resistance and the setup you can repeat.

Is a hack squat easier than a leg press?

Not universally. Both guide the movement, but their setup, loading and safety mechanisms differ. Familiarity with the machine matters. Choose the setup you can use confidently and learn its adjustments before adding load.

Is a leg extension the same kind of exercise as a squat?

A leg extension focuses on straightening the knee. A squat involves both the knees and hips and also requires you to support the load. They can play different roles in a workout.
