Already have equipment? Find exercises you can do

Your goals and available space

Start with your overall goal, then choose a buying priority and the space you can make available. All plans consider whole-body training. Mark only equipment you already own in “What do you have?”.

Compare resistance you can adjust as you progress. Start with a complete setup for whole-body training, then add equipment for movements you want to include.

Choose one setup to compare with what you own. You do not need everything on this page.

This filters suggested purchases. Check each product's dimensions and leave room to move, load weights and use any anchors.

Leave this off if you cannot install or use a compatible anchor or bar. Owning a band does not imply an anchor.

  • A pair of hex dumbbells on a home gym floor
    Example setup

    Start with dumbbells

Choose this if you want loaded floor exercises without installing an anchor. You can add a bench later for supported rows and bench presses.

    To buy

    • Dumbbells

    Examples it adds

    Tradeoff

A fixed pair has one load. An adjustable set or several pairs provides more load choices. Floor presses are available; bench and incline presses need a bench.

  • A cast-iron kettlebell on a home gym floor
    Example setup

    Start with a kettlebell

Choose this if kettlebell movements are what you want to learn and you prefer a single weight to store. It does not supply the paired dumbbells used by the dumbbell floor-press guide.

    To buy

    • Kettlebell

    Examples it adds

    Tradeoff

One fixed weight will not suit every movement. Leave clear space for swings and overhead work.

    11 extra matching exercises

  • Resistance bands and handles with high, chest-height and low wall anchors
    Example setup

    Start with resistance bands

Choose this if storage matters and you can provide the listed anchor positions. Check the full band-and-anchor price rather than comparing a band alone with a set of weights.

    To buy

    • Resistance band
    • Pair of compatible band handles
    • Padded floor mat

    Examples it adds

    Tradeoff

The list includes the compatible handles and secure anchor positions your matching exercises need. One suitable anchoring system may provide several positions.

    5 extra matching exercises

  • A barbell with matching plates resting on a rubber floor
    Example setup

Barbell and plates for floor lifts

Choose this if deadlifts and barbell rows are your priorities. You can plan those floor lifts before adding a rack or bench.

    To buy

    • Barbell and plates

    Examples it adds

    Tradeoff

This does not enable the checked barbell squat, overhead-press or bench-press setups. Include compatible plates and collars, and check floor suitability and room to load the bar.

    7 extra matching exercises

Choose weights or resistance you can use now and increase as you progress. For benches, racks and mounted equipment, check the manufacturer's load ratings, compatibility and installation instructions before buying.

How setups are checked

Each exercise has a complete equipment setup. A flat bench does not provide an incline setting, and a resistance band does not provide its own anchor. An adjustable bench with flat, incline and upright settings covers both bench choices.

The list covers exercises with checked equipment setups in our guides. Some guides include several variations; follow the setup shown on the card. Adding more exercises gives you more options, rather than a measure of how effective your gym is.
