Ring muscle-up
What is a ring muscle-up?
A ring muscle-up combines a pull, a transition and a dip to move from below the rings to straight-arm support above them. This guide covers a strict repetition with a false grip and no intentional swing or hip drive.

How do you perform a ring muscle-up?
Set up
- Suspend matching rings securely with room above and below them. Practise low-ring transitions and a controlled return with your feet supporting you before using high rings.
- Set a false grip by placing the heel of each hand over the lower inside edge of the ring. Start in a still hang with straight elbows and the grip secure.
Execution
- Pull the rings close toward your lower chest while keeping them near your torso.
- Lean the chest forward over your hands, moving both elbows behind you together so the rings stay beside your ribs.
- From the bottom of the dip, press to straight elbows and steady the rings beside your hips.
- Lower into the dip and reverse the transition close to your body to return to a controlled hang. Use your practised dismount after the set.
Common mistakes
Losing the false grip during the pull
Return to low-ring practice and rebuild the grip before full attempts.
Spreading the rings far apart
Use foot assistance to learn a close, even transition and support.
Where it fits in a session
Practice this movement while you can control the required positions and finish each repetition deliberately.
Practise separate pulling, transition and support work before full repetitions. Use foot assistance rather than forcing a failed transition or falling out of the dip.

Schematic surface view. Some muscles are partly visible or not shown.
Variations
- Kipping ring muscle-up — Uses an intentional swing and hip drive; it requires a different transition and return.
Frequently asked questions
What is a false grip?
The heel of the hand rests over the ring instead of hanging entirely underneath it. That position lets you move into support without completely changing the grip during the transition.
How can I scale a ring muscle-up?
Set low rings and keep your feet on the floor to practise the pull, transition and dip together. Add only enough leg assistance to keep the movement smooth.
