Stationary bike

What does a stationary bike do?
A stationary bike is a fixed cardio machine that you pedal while seated. An upright model places the pedals below the saddle and the handlebars in front, giving it a position similar to a conventional bicycle without the need to steer or balance. The quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteus maximus and lower-leg muscles share the repeating pedal cycle. This guide covers fitting and using the machine; the session itself depends on why the bike is in your plan.

How do you use a stationary bike?
Set up
- Raise or lower the saddle until the knee remains slightly bent when that pedal reaches the bottom, then place the handlebars where you can reach them without stretching.
- Sit in the centre of the saddle, place the front half of each foot on a pedal, and fasten the straps if the bike has them.
Execution
- Begin pedalling while seated, keeping your hips steady and your hands relaxed on the handlebars.
- Let each knee follow the direction of its foot as the pedals circle, without reaching for the bottom or rocking across the saddle.
- To finish, use the machine controls and wait until the pedals are still before releasing any straps and stepping off.
Common mistakes
Riding with the saddle too high or too low
Rocking from side to side to reach the bottom points to a saddle that is too high. A knee that stays deeply bent at the bottom points to one that is too low. Stop and make a small adjustment instead of changing your pedal stroke to fit the setting.
Putting the feet on the pedals unevenly
A foot balanced on the toes or arch can shift as the crank turns. Centre the front half of each foot on its pedal and use the straps when they are available, without tightening them until they pinch.
Bracing hard through the handlebars
Locked elbows and raised shoulders usually mean the reach is awkward or the hands are doing more than supporting position. Relax the grip and adjust the saddle or bars if a comfortable reach is not possible.
Removing a foot while the pedals are moving
The crank can continue to carry the other pedal around. Let the mechanism settle completely before undoing straps or leaving the saddle.

Put the stationary bike wherever it belongs in the session you already have planned; this machine guide does not choose that role.

A stationary bike is a cardio machine rather than a resistance exercise aimed at one muscle. The thigh, hip and lower-leg muscles contribute at different points as the cranks turn, so they are listed together rather than ranked as primary and secondary movers.
Variations
- Recumbent bike — Places the seat behind the crank and supports the back, rather than using the upright position shown here.
- Indoor cycling bike — Uses a road-bike-like saddle and handlebar arrangement while remaining fixed in place.
- Air bike — Links the pedals to moving handles so the arms push and pull as the legs turn the crank.
Frequently asked questions
What muscles does a stationary bike work?
Pedalling involves the quadriceps and hamstrings around the knee, the gluteus maximus at the hip, and the gastrocnemius, soleus and tibialis anterior around the lower leg. Their activity changes through the crank circle, so the guide does not present one of them as the sole target.
How high should a stationary-bike saddle be?
Start where the knee remains slightly bent with the pedal at its lowest point. Lower the saddle if you have to rock a hip down to reach; raise it if the knee remains tightly bent at the bottom. Make small changes until both sides move without either compensation.
Where should your feet sit on stationary-bike pedals?
Support the front half of each foot on the pedal rather than balancing on the toes or arch. If the pedals have straps, secure them firmly enough to keep the feet in place without pinching.
Is a stationary bike the same as outdoor cycling?
Both use a repeating pedal cycle, but a stationary bike holds the frame in one place. Outdoor cycling also requires steering, balance and adapting to the road or trail, which this machine-use guide does not cover.
What is the difference between an upright and recumbent bike?
An upright bike places the crank below the saddle and asks you to support your torso as you reach the handlebars. A recumbent bike places the seat behind the crank and supports the back. This guide and its illustration cover the upright version.
How long or how hard should you use a stationary bike?
That depends on why the bike is in the session. A warm-up, cool-down, general cardio session and preparation for an event call for different choices. Use the plan for that session rather than treating one amount of work or one machine setting as correct for everyone.
