Kettlebell deadlift
What is a kettlebell deadlift?
A kettlebell deadlift lifts one kettlebell from between the feet to a standing position. Both hands share the handle, and the hips and knees straighten together. The weight returns to the floor between repetitions.

How do you perform a kettlebell deadlift?
Set up
- Place a kettlebell on the floor between your feet. Take a stance that leaves room for the bell and your hands between your knees.
- Push your hips back and bend your knees to wrap both hands around the handle. Keep your whole foot planted.
- With straight arms, brace your trunk and hold your back steady before lifting.
Execution
- Stand by pressing through both feet, keeping the kettlebell beneath your hands as your knees and hips straighten.
- Finish tall with the bell hanging in front of your pelvis. Do not pull it upward with your arms or lean backward.
- Bend at the hips and knees to place the bell back between your feet. Pause on the floor and re-establish your brace before lifting again.
Common mistakes
Swinging the kettlebell
The deadlift is a controlled lift and return. Keep the bell under your hands instead of projecting it forward.
Crowding the handle with the knees
Adjust your stance so both hands can reach the handle without pushing the knees out of their natural line.
Leaning back at the finish
End at a tall standing position. Extra backward movement is not part of the repetition.
Where it fits in a session
Place it where your session calls for a deadlift or another loaded lower-body movement.
Choose a weight that lets you repeat the floor setup and standing finish without changing the movement.

Schematic surface view. Some muscles are partly visible or not shown.
The glutes help straighten the hips and the quadriceps straighten the knees. Both are listed for their roles in the movement, without ranking their relative workload.
Variations
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as a Romanian deadlift?
No. This version starts on the floor and includes enough knee bend to reach the handle. A Romanian deadlift begins from standing and is lowered mainly by moving the hips back.
Do you use one or two kettlebells?
This guide uses one kettlebell held in both hands between the legs. A two-kettlebell deadlift or a one-handed suitcase deadlift is a separate variation.
