Russian twist alternatives

Cable wood chops offer resisted trunk rotation from a standing position. Pallof presses and side planks offer broader trunk-control options when rotation is not needed in the slot.

The original rotates the torso from side to side while seated with the feet down. A diagonal standing pull, resisting rotation or holding a side plank changes the movement; no option is a repetition or load conversion.

    Similar movement

    Cable wood chop

You need: Adjustable cable pulley set high + Single cable handle

    Why it fits
Keeps controlled trunk rotation against resistance.
    What changes
Stand side-on and guide one handle with both hands from above shoulder height toward the opposite hip. Hips and feet turn with the torso; this replaces the seated side-to-side path with a diagonal cable path.

    Different movement

    Pallof press

You need: Adjustable cable pulley at chest height + Single cable handle

    Why it fits
Offers trunk control against a sideways cable pull.
    What changes
The standing guide presses both hands forward while preventing the shoulders and hips from turning. It resists rotation instead of producing the Russian twist’s rotation.

  • Anatomical illustration of a forearm side plank, with a straight body line and the side of the abdomen highlighted.

    Different movement

    Side plank

You need: Floor space (no equipment)

    Why it fits
    Offers a floor-based trunk-control hold.
    What changes
Support the body on one forearm and stacked feet, holding a straight line without turning. This replaces rotation with a timed side-support hold; train both sides.

How we choose replacements

These are curated alternatives, chosen for the movement and the job the exercise does in a workout. A shared muscle group is not enough. Read what changes before choosing: support, range of motion, balance and resistance can all differ. If your goal is to improve a specific lift, alternatives do not replace practice of that lift.
